A crítica de Leo Strauss ao historicismo de Edmund Burke

Resumo: O presente artigo visa examinar a crítica do pensador teuto-americano Leo Strauss ao estadista irlandês Edmund Burke, sobretudo exposto no livro Direito Natural e História. Apesar de ambos os autores serem frequentemente tidos como exemplos de pensadores conservadores, Strauss enquadra Burke dentro do que ele chama de historicismo, uma grande mazela do pensamento moderno. A filosofia política do estadista irlandês, ao ressaltar a importância das circunstâncias locais para a ordem política, se afasta da busca por uma ordem eterna e, portanto, pode resultar em um relativismo não só político, mas também moral. A crítica de Strauss expõe divergências, as quais, levadas a sério, revelam que reduzir esses autores a simples caracterizações, faz com que se perca a verdadeira dimensão de suas obras. Although both authors are often held up as examples of conservative thinkers, Strauss frames Burke within what he calls historicism, a major evil in modern thought. The political philosophy of the Irish statesman, by emphasizing the importance of local circumstances for the political order, moves away from the search for an eternal order and, therefore, can result in a relativism that is not only political, but also moral. Strauss' criticism exposes divergences, which, taken seriously, reveal that reducing these authors to simple characterizations causes the true dimension of their works to be lost.
