In this article, I will analyze the presence of historical and dialectical materialism in The Second Sex (1949), arguing that, although the tension between idealism and materialism is present for Simone de Beauvoir, her analysis of the situation of women's oppression tends more towards materialism. Initially, I will present the main materialist interpretations of this work. Then I will demonstrate the materialist aspect of the concept situation. Finally, I will analyze how Beauvoir uses the Hegelian dialectic of master and slave to understand the dynamics of oppression between men and women. My interpretative thesis is that the dialectic of vassalage does not enclose an idealist relationship between man and woman, as the philosopher does not disregard the material and concrete relationship between the sexes in order to understand the alterity of women.
