Arbítrio e os fins da política: reflexões à luz do republicanismo de Philip Pettit

Abstract: Standing between positive freedom, with an Aristotelian foundation, and freedom as the absence of interference, which goes back to the liberal tradition, the ideal of non-domination, from which Philip Pettit structures his concept of freedom, undertakes a recovery of elements of different wings of republican thought, especially the notion of non-arbitrariness. Starting from the political theory structured by Pettit and from his dialogue with authors of the liberal tradition, the purpose of this article is to present elements that allow to investigate the connections, in contemporary democracies, between the growing limitation of public space and the adoption of arbitrary practices, which result in the total denial of the republican ideal of freedom.
