We intend to show in this article that Nietzsche also understands in positive ways the asceticism in his late philosophy. From the reconstruction of the meanings of asceticism in the philosophy of the free spirit and in the work Thus Spoke Zarathustra, we argue that Nietzsche esteems the philosophers’ asceticism even more in his works Beyond Good and Evil and in the Genealogy of Morals. However, it was in 1888 that he deepened the conception of art as a way of life, closely linked to forms of philosophical asceticism. In this last year of philosophical production, the projects on the physiology of art and the construction of aesthetic values are developed. Thus, asceticism, as the “artist’s hardness”, is a condition for the task of transvaluation of values, which Nietzsche intends to effect in himself.
