The third dispute (In what are similes e in what are differents the Poets and the Painters) appears in the workDue Lezzioni (1549), by Benedetto Varchi. The oration presents his demonstration by exposing the ancient arguments of the theme of ut pictura poesis, which establishes an analogy between painting and poetry, both in principles and in the effect of producing an image that delights, persuades and teaches. The end of the third oration comes down to a praise to Dante and Michelangelo, who are regarded as the most excellent in what they have done – Dante as a poet and the father of the italian language, and Michelangelo, as the artist per excellence of the Renaissance. It establishes, thus, the relation between Michelangelo and Dante. Michelangelo whose excellence rivals that of Dante, is for Varchi the personification of perfect art and this same praise will be repeated by the various others writers contemporary to him.
