The aim of this paper is to show that eudaimonics and consequencialists ethics, even though they are both teleological, are deeply divergent conceptions. Our focus will be on the different ways ancient and modern authors deal with the notion of happiness, as a kind of activity or as a state of affairs. We’ll argue that the understanding of eudaimonia as an activity makes ancient ethics, paradoxically, closer to deontological ones than to consequencialistics ones. At the end of our paper we’ll explore some related issues such as the notions of maximization and altruism.
