Freud proposed a theory of personality based on the establishment of psychoanalysis. Our goal is to go through some of his early texts, which were written together with Breuer, trying to delimit what Freud understood about personality alterations, such as dual personality. This phenomenon gained an important prominence in the 19th century, generating discussions in the fields of psychology and philosophy, since it implied a rupture of the personality unit. Freud offered an original interpretation of such changes in light of his investigations of hysteria. To explain the unfoldings of personality, Freud focused on a theory of defense, placing the repression (Verdrängung) as a model mechanism to understand personality and its pathologies.
