It is known that in 1886 Nietzsche writes new prefaces to his old books, evaluating and rethinking his ideas. Books that receive new prefaces are: The Birth of tragedy; Human, all too human (books I and II); Daybreak; Gay Science. This article has as main objective to present the ambiguity of The Birth of the tragedy (1872), based on the preface Self-Critical Test (1886). In our view, Nietzsche shows, in his late preface, how The Birth of tragedy stands for the overcoming of metaphysics, but how the book seems, at the same time, to continue the same. Therefore, the artist metaphysics, Basilar concept of The Birth of tragedy, breaks with the moral interpretation of existence, promoting, from the becoming, an aesthetic justification of the world, but, simultaneously, it also seems to be a continuation of the metaphysical tradition so criticized, becoming ambiguous.
