The paper aims at analyzing the concept of reason in two of Horkheimer’s writings, both published immediately prior to his work with Theodor W. Adorno, Dialectic of enlightenment. The critique of instrumental rationality, that later on acquired a more radical character, will be investigated in the works The End of Reason and Eclipse of Reason. In these writings it is possible to identify different dimensions that constitute the concept of reason, which nevertheless have been modified in the course of history and given place to an instrumental form of rationality, completely alien to the interests of human life.
