This article aims to offer an interpretation of the problem of the so-called “correction of names”, present in Plato's dialogue Cratylus. Starting from the discussion between Socrates and his interlocutors, Hermogenes and Cratylus, which apparently is only in a linguistic sphere, we will see how the transition to the ontological and epistemological plane of the question of names takes place. My reading proposal, therefore, is to show how Plato brings out, from each of the theses presented, his own theory on the question of names.
