O PROBLEMA DA FORMA ASPECTUAL NA CONCEPÇÃO DE SEARLE SOBRE O INCONSCIENTE

This paper assess the role of the concept of ‘aspectual shape’ – the fact that all representations represent their objects under certain aspects, and not others – in Searle’s argument for the dispositional theory of the unconscious. After a discussion of his arguments for the connection between unconscious intentionality and consciousness (section 2), the paper discusses the reasons for accepting that the aspectual shape has objective existence (section 3) and the way how unconscious mental causation requires the presence of occurrent mental properties (section 4). The only reason for Searle’s denial of an unconscious mental existence is his excessive, and unwarranted, restriction to the subjective point of view about conscious experience (section 5).
