In a widely known Familiar letter (24.4), fictitiously addressed to the Roman orator Marco Tulio Cicero, Petrarch sets forth Vergil as the leading guide on your poetic journey whilst Cicero himself, the Romani eloquii summus parens, is pointed out as the prime model of Petrarchan prose. This paper aims to present an approach to the Petrarchan’s use of Cicero as one of the most important models both for your prose writings and for the ethos of Christian orator and wise man of Letters which Petrarch carefully builds to himself through his works.
