Pierre Manent e a crítica do pensamento político moderno: uma investigação do legado intelectual de Leo Strauss

Resumo: O presente artigo investiga a interpretação de Pierre Manent a respeito do pensamento político moderno e do liberalismo moderno à luz de sua inspiração na filosofia de Leo Strauss. O status da relação de Strauss com o regime liberal democrático é um problema. Strauss foi um crítico da modernidade, ao mesmo tempo que se dizia amigo do regime democrático moderno. É contra o pano de fundo dessa problemática que se pretende analisar como a herança filosófica de Strauss se desenvolveu na teoria política contemporânea, a fim de pensar os dilemas de nosso regime político. A investigação se concentra na análise de alguns dos principais livros, ensaios e entrevistas de Manent, como estudo de caso. O artigo demonstra como Manent se nutriu, ainda que de modo crítico, amplamente da filosofia straussiana para pensar a genealogia e a natureza da democracia liberal, principalmente ao localizar a formação do regime em um projeto político-filosófico moderno iniciado por Maquiavel. Além disso, explora como o filósofo se inspira nessa análise para elaborar um diagnóstico dos problemas e estabelecer uma relação de amizade crítica com o regime. Palavras-chave: Modernidade; Straussianismo; Liberalismo; Democracia; Individualismo Pierre Manent and the critique of modern political thought: an investigation of Leo Strauss's intellectual legacy Abstract: This article investigates Pierre Manent's interpretation of modern political thought and modern liberalism in light of his inspiration from the philosophy of Leo Strauss. The status of Strauss's relationship with the liberal democratic regime is a problem. Strauss was a critic of modernity, while at the same time, he claimed to be a friend of the modern democratic regime. It is against the backdrop of this problematic relationship that we intend to analyze how Strauss's philosophical legacy has evolved in contemporary political theory in order to address the dilemmas of our political regime. The investigation focuses on the analysis of some of Manent's key books, essays, and interviews as a case study. The article demonstrates how Manent, albeit critically, drew extensively from Strauss's philosophy to contemplate the genealogy and nature of liberal democracy, particularly by locating the formation of the regime within a modern political-philosophical project initiated by Machiavelli. Furthermore, it explores how the philosopher draws inspiration from this analysis to diagnose problems and establish a relationship of critical friendship with the regime.
