Among the reinterpretations of Freud, Jessica Benjamin and Whitebook turn to the pre-Oedipal maternal domain as a safeguard for a feminist psychoanalysis. But such an interpretation would not be critical enough, because it transfers the preponderance of the father to the mother, disregarding non-binary theories whose psychoanalytic sources are found in other unofficial readings of Freud. Such were the visions of Loewald, Chodorow and Butler, which think the complementarity between pre-Oedipal and Oedipal developments or even the internal subversion of the Oedipus complex. From this debate originate two contemporary critical models based on gender perspectives: maternal binary x non-binary.
