2023Ágatha Cavallari. UMA LEITURA ESPINOSANA DE "A NÁUSEA": A MELANCOLIA DE ROQUENTIN. Cadernos Espinosanos, n. 48, p. 209-233, 2023.2
This article aims to analyze the notion of melancholy as presented in the characterization of Roquentin, the protagonist of the Sartre's novel “Nausea”, in the light of Spinoza's analysis of the affections, in parts III and IV of “Ethics”. In Sartre's book, we can observe constant suggestions about the character's peculiar sorrow, based on his relationship with the discovery of contingency. On the other hand, according to ontological necessity, Spinoza's considerations about the affections affirm the impotence of the melancholy person and point out the bondage of the one who believes to be led by fortune. Therefore, in this dynamic, we will indicate Roquentin as the example of the man who is not his own master, in Spinoza's terms.
