What are dreams made of? More specifically, how could we think the question of the materiality of dream productions in the light of the writings of Walter Benjamin? In fact, one must first face the challenge of this rather uncomfortable question: would the dream really have a strictly material density? In this case, contrary to Heraclitus of Ephesus, would it be possible to share a common world precisely from the spectral objectivity of what we dream? Of course, this is a perspective as unlikely as it is unsettling. If this were not so, Benjamin's ideas would have been accepted without any great objection. But, as we know, that was not quite the case. From Romanticism to materialistic Dialectics; from Stoicism to Baroque; from Psychoanalysis to Surrealism: all these passages, deviations, juxtapositions, frictions, metamorphoses and dislocations circumscribe the constellation of the dream in Walter Benjamin’s work, bringing to his discussions an enormous relevance to think of the multiple nexuses and productive tensions between the experience of the artistic vanguards, Freudian oneirocritique and Marxist studies.
