The article aims to discuss the introductory function of the first chapter of Spinoza’s Political Treatise. To this end, we will emphasize some of the fundamental aspects in the text’s argumentative movement, such as the central role played by the affects in political reasoning and the need for a method of investigation which articulates experience and reason.
