This paper analyses the notes Leibniz wrote in 1678 on the then recently published Spinoza’s Ethics, showing how they foreshadow some ulterior developments of his metaphysical theory. Taking as the point of departure of this analysis Leibniz’s critics to Proposition 2 of the Part I of the Ethics, the paper will show how the discussions on the compatibility between freedom and determinism, that occupy the center of his metaphysical concerns in the following decades, resume themes and problems considered in these notes, even if they are somehow different from the original context. It will be showed, in particular, that the relation between autonomy and the power of choice can be better understood as a development of theses explored in this first reading of Spinoza’s work
